About The Therapist
Meet Monica

I grew up on a farm outside of Wichita, Kansas. Prior to beginning my career as a counselor, I taught English Language Arts for 10 years at public high schools in both Kansas and Texas. As a teacher, I often found myself wishing I could work with my students on a more individual level to help guide them through their struggles, leading me to pursue my Master of Education in Counseling from Wichita State University.
Over the last several years, I have experienced quite a few life transitions, including getting married, moving to Texas from Kansas, becoming a mother, and, last but not least, leaving public education for the field of private practice. Some of these changes were quite unexpected, especially in the midst of a pandemic, and it taught me that we cannot always choose when big changes happen--but we can choose to be bigger than the change!
So, why "Sunflower"?

While the name "Sunflower" is a nod to my roots in the Sunflower State of Kansas, I was also inspired by the idea that sunflowers can grow almost anywhere they are planted, no matter how harsh the conditions. Similar to the sunflower, we can create something beautiful in the midst of difficulty with the right tools and perseverance. In addition, young sunflowers are drawn to the sun and face it each day in order to thrive, just as we must also choose to see the light in our lives to be our happiest, healthiest selves!

My Specializations
I offer a safe, secure space for you to feel heard in a way you might not have in any other place through providing an empathic, affirming environment.

My Philosophy
My philosophy is that anyone can benefit from counseling, regardless of how big or small their problems might seem. Just as we might take steps to prevent physical ailments by eating healthy and exercising, seeking counseling before life becomes overwhelming helps build coping strategies and mental and emotional health so that when life struggles do arise, we are better equipped to handle them, whether as an individual, a couple, or a family.

Because no two clients are the same, I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Gottman method, person-centered, and solution-focused therapy. Through these strategies, I aim to help people find the strength within themselves to heal from the past, live in the present, and look towards the future.
